Elevoplasty™ Compared to Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty
Elevoplasty™ was developed as a simple, minimally-invasive solution to lift the soft palate tissue to reduce or eliminate snoring. It was designed as a practical alternative to more involved treatment approaches, such as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP).
Elevoplasty™ is an office-based procedure that provides a therapeutic option for the patient who suffers from simple snoring without sleep apnea. It may fill a need for those patients seeking relief from snoring who are not interested in wearing an oral appliance during sleep hours, and whom are not willing to undergo invasive palate surgery such as the UPPP procedure.
How does Elevoplasty™ work?
The basic concept of Elevoplasty™ is to use specially-shaped proprietary resorbable barbed sutures to provide lift to the soft palate without surgery, thereby alleviating snoring by three mechanisms. The procedure is designed to make the soft palate slightly shorter, reducing the chances of the soft palate obstructing the airway during sleep.
How does UPPP work?
UPPP is a surgical procedure used to target and remove soft tissue in the throat, thereby widening the airway and reducing the likelihood of airway obstruction and snoring. UPPP is typically only recommended for patients with severe snoring or sleep apnea who have not found relief with other snoring treatments and lifestyle changes.
The UPPP procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis at a surgery center or hospital, during which the patient is under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon will surgically remove problematic tissue from the throat area, including soft palate tissue. The amount of tissue removed and specific areas that are targeted will depend on each patient’s unique circumstances.
How does Elevoplasty™ differ from the UPPP procedure?
While both Elevoplasty™ and UPPP are designed to treat the soft palate tissue that causes snoring, effectively enlarging the airway and reducing the chances of obstruction, Elevoplasty™ is a non-surgical treatment and does not involve general anesthesia or a post-operative recovery period. In contrast to the tissue removal involved in a UPPP surgery, Elevoplasty™ involves the insertion of specially-shaped, proprietary sutures that provide lift to the soft palate without surgery.
What are the benefits of Elevoplasty™?
The Elevoplasty™ procedure may offer the following:
- A potential anatomic remedy for snoring
- A minimally-invasive procedure
- Performed in-office
- Patients may return to normal activities the same day as treatment
